John & Joyce Meerstra
This week John & Joyce Meerstra have served in PNG with New Tribes for 28 years, and they're are now poised to step into a new season in their lives and ministry: The following verses coincides with what’s soon happening in our lives:
"We can make our plans but the Lord determines our steps.” Proverbs 16:9
"God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock? God arms me with strength, and He makes my way perfect." Psa 18:30-32
A great reminder of God’s faithfulness to us over the years through all the many promises in His Word that are true. God’s way is unimproveable. It’s already the best ever, perfect. We have a great God to lean on in the transitions of our lives, and yet at times we find ourselves weak in our faith and the need to refocus in verses like those above.
With that in mind, we’d appreciate your prayers as we say good bye to our many coworkers and national friends here in PNG. Jared graduates from High School on May 26th and says his good bye’s to his life long school friends. May 29 we hop on a plane for Alberta Canada and look to our Lord in this major transition of our lives. On our arrival we reunite with Jaycee after a year and 9 months of being apart. This in a nutshell is what’s happening in the days ahead.
After 28 years, 27 of those years flying for our missionaries, we are transitioning to life back in Canada. It has been a joy and privilege to serve in this land of Papua New Guinea. God in His grace gave me 10,400 hours of safe flying, to God be the Glory. Together you all have been a part of seeing the Gospel message go out to many tribal people over these years. As we write the Maliyali people are hearing God’s Word for their first time through our three missionary families. Last week I met again two men who have been involved in translating the New Testament into their tribal tongue Norambi and had just finished it after 20 years. I had flown them many times. Survey work continues to happen for allocating a number of our new missionaries. We are thankful for the different opportunities for closure and saying goodbye to some of our close PNG “family”.
There are many unknowns as we look ahead to what the Lord has next for us. Thankful that initially we have a place to stay (Joyce’s parents basement apartment) and their van to use until we can find something else. Our mission has told us we have until the end of the year to either find another ministry or it might be time to retire from the mission and look for employment. During these next months we appreciate prayer for direction, provision, and also opportunity to connect with our family, friends and supporters as last time we were home Covid limited that.
You are all a part of these different aspects of seeing the Gospel message go out. Thank you for standing behind us with your love, care, and prayers over all these years. Thank you for making it possible for us to serve here with using the tool of the airplane to speed up this work over the many years!!
Serving the Lord together,
