Paul Hickock

Paul Hickock

This week our global worker is Paul Hickok who is with Samaritan’s Purse in Jordan. Paul has been doing maintenance and logistics at a hospital there for the past 12 years.

Paul has just sent us an update on the hospital where he's serving with Samaritan's Purse:

For the most part the clinic in Jordan is operating with the usual daily issues.

As a clinic for respiratory issues the medical staff see their share of interesting cases both with the out-patient clinic as well as the in-patient, admitted patients. The specialty is TB but nobody is turned away. If we can’t help, then they are referred elsewhere.
This past year has seen the staff dealing with strange cases of TB. Not unheard of but the volume has the medical staff doing lots of extra research.

Patients that are admitted can spend many months recuperating and that gives the doctors and nurses lots of time to deal one on one and interesting conversations result from these time which would normally not occur.  We have a great caring staff there and some of the patients really don’t want to leave when their time comes.

Now that travel into the country is back to normal, we are receiving volunteer workers both in the medical field and maintenance. We have many repeat volunteers over the years and it’s good to see some of them back in the swing of things.

One serious issue that all (foreign) staff are dealing with now is not being able to get residency cards. It’s an issue that all foreigners in the country are dealing with and it greatly complicates the lives of those working here longterm. It’s a process that has to work it’s way through the government system and it’s a slow grind that’s been going on for a year now.

Thanks for getting in touch!
