Kevin and Laurel Penner
Kevin and Laurel Penner are working with Wycliffe in Mexico. Their work is focused on Bible translation both directly and in a leadership role. "Hi, Mount Olive! On February 29 leaders from the churches in Ixtayutla, Tyoñuu, Huamuche and Frutillo, as well as believers from Tyakasɨ that don't yet have a church gathered at our church in Chukun to have a mini‑conference on Bible translation. Leaders from only one church that we had invited were unable to come due to a health crisis. Pastor Francisco and I think that it is really important for these leaders to understand what is involved in translation so that they will accept, use and promote the translated scriptures, as well as be able to help us in improving them. For several hours we worshipped together in Mixtec, listened as various translation team members gave short presentations, and watched the Seven Days of Creation video (dubbed with the text of Genesis 1 – 2:3 in Mixtec) and a video about how the Bible came to be translated into Spanish. I also talked about how the Ixtayutla Mixtec Bible translation project began in 2005, with Francisco, his dad and his brother. Possibly the highlight for me was when we worked through the translation of the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 together. The exercise started off tentatively, but eventually some good discussion developed and we made a revision to one of the phrases in this text that has already seen much deliberation. Thank you so much for your prayers. We believe that this was an important step in involving the wider community in the work of Bible translation, and a great way to foster unity among the followers of Jesus in this area. We are grateful for the people who took the time and expense to come, for the ladies who prepared the food, the participation of the translation team and that there was plenty of food and drink, even though the numbers swelled beyond what we had planned for.”
